The older my body grows, the more places I find myself having to go. Wrapped in the damp, heavy green of the trees and a sky the bright color of soda, a resting place for those who left before us. Startled by the weight of death, which I was bearing for the first time, I kept faltering. Yet the breeze and the stillness that quietly enfolded the place held none of the regret or sorrow I had expected. I wished I could be like that, too.
As I saw death off, life arrived. Two events I had believed stood at opposite ends swept through me within the span of a single season. The experience led me to imagine a thin, transparent membrane settling over my body. In this way, death and life trespassed upon each other’s borders within me.
What weighed on me was less the grief itself than the fact that I could not precisely explain what I felt at the time. I was certainly feeling something, yet I could not fully give it a name.
Not long after, it was my hand, rather than my heart, that was injured. I could no longer press the brush firmly into the surface as I used to. With no other choice, I held the brush clumsily and began to draw and paint as though sweeping snow pellets with a brushwood broom. Strangely, watching the stiff oil paint rasp its way into the grain of the jangji paper brought me an unexpected thrill. I felt as if I were wrapped in yet another layer of membrane.
Around the time the bones of my hand were settling back into place, I wanted to take places that actually exist as my starting point, and to observe how the sensations I encountered there are transformed within painting, and what of them remains. A place becomes something we can call upon together once it receives a name. But a name also tends to lead our gaze first toward the familiar stories that surround it. What I went through there was written nowhere among those stories.
It was around then that my mind turned away from sensations I could not name and toward values that could be clearly verified. I began to use the coordinates of places as the titles of my works. Written in latitude and longitude, coordinates point to a single spot on the earth. I came to think of them as yet another membrane laid over a place. This membrane, however, veils rather than enfolds. It indicates a location with precision, yet says nothing of what happened there, or of what remained with the one who experienced it.
By taking coordinates as titles, I wanted to set aside, for a while, the names and stories attached to places. If coordinates are an indifferent notation that marks a place as a mere point, painting approaches it otherwise. It tenderly asks again what my body saw and felt there, and what traces that experience left within me.
